This project for a mixed use commercial centre is located in the historic De Waterkant District of the city center. The project which spans an entire city block comprises a series of interlinked buildings which are both existing and new. Given the heritage sensitivity of the site and certain of the existing buildings, archilab was tasked with the development and refining of the aesthetic design for the complex. This was followed by obtaining planning approval from the heritage authorities for some of the more detailed aspects of the project. One of the key focus areas was the additions above the existing EK Green buildings and the “Capella” corner where a strategy of strikingly modern is used to offset and compliment the historic buildings.
